Square Enix has announced that they will be releasing Final Fantasy VI for Android and iOS devices.
Final Fantasy is one of the most renowned RPG franchises of all time, from it’s days on the Nintendo Entertainment System, to today on multiple platforms like Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC, Final Fantasy has been ever growing in its fan base. We’ve seen a fair amount of remastered titles from the Final Fantasy series on mobile platforms, some we’ve even seen remastered several times over, like Final Fantasy III and IV. Currently multiple versions of Final Fantasy I-V have been released on both iOS and Android devices, and fans have been patiently waiting for one of the most favored Final Fantasy games in the series, Final Fantasy VI. Square Enix recently released a new trailer for Final Fantasy VI remastered for iOS and Android devices.
For any of you who don’t know your Final Fantasy history, Final Fantasy VI was actually originally released in the U.S. as Final Fantasy III. The reason for this was because the U.S never received FF III – V until much later on, so to avoid confusion they renamed the title to Final Fantasy III. This was one of those titles that really started to bring in a dedicated fan base, fans have often argued that Final Fantasy VI is the best in the series. I’m more of a VII guy to be honest, but none of that really matters, anyone who claims to enjoy the Final Fantasy series can’t deny its enjoyable gameplay and immersive story telling. So whether VI is your favorite in the series or not, its still something to get excited about as a Final Fantasy fan.
Along with being re-released for mobile platforms, the game will also receive a slight make-over. Aside from the fact the controls will need to be converted to work with a touch-screen, the graphics are being updated to better display on current devices. To give you a good idea of the improvement in quality, we’ve added some before and after pictures of the title to give you a ‘clear’ view of the remade game.

Unfortunately, we do not have specifics yet on when the game is set to release, or if iOS or Android will see it first. We’re expecting to see the game released first in Japan some time this winter as shown in the trailer. I can’t imagine it taking too much longer after that release to get a translated port to the U.S. My guess is that we might see it on the western side of the world, sometime in the first quarter of 2014. If you’re a fan of the series and need something to help you through the wait, you can check out Final Fantasy V on iOS or Android, which just received another 3D make-over, and is also a fan favorite of the series. We’ll be sure to keep you posted on any updated news regarding the port for Final Fantasy VI to smartphones.
Side-Note: Final Fantasy VII: It appears that a port of Final Fantasy VII may also be on the line-up for Square-Enix. This would undoubtable be a much bigger project for the company, but depending on how the sales go for Final Fantasy VI, it very well could be next in the line-up for the Final Fantasy remakes on mobile platforms.
