Comex (pictured) has just released an alpha build of Substitute, the Cydia Substrate replacement that has been a very popular point of discussions among jailbreakers in the past few weeks. As you may or may not already know, a Cydia replacement is in the works and Substitute marks a very important point towards completing that goal as Cydia Substrate is one of the most crucial pieces of the puzzle.
Though this alpha build is available to everyone (seeing as how the whole point of this endeavor is to keep things open), Comex warns that users should only install it if they know what they are doing as problems are to be expected. This is aimed more at those who wish to get an early look at the project and developers that want to check the compatibility of their work with Substitute.
If you are interested in jailbreaking but not really active in the scene, the only thing you need to know is that a Cydia replacement might just change the jailbreak landscape completely. Cydia’s Jay “saurik” Freeman has been instrumental in turning jailbroken iPhones into what they are today but there are many who will more than welcome new competition in the field. I am not sure whether this will lead to greener pastures or create more mess than it is worth but these are exciting times indeed.
